To start, I’ve had to make some changes to my website in response to my very fragile database. I’ve been having issues on and off for the last year, and I’ve tried a lot of workarounds to fix it, but nothing really worked. This morning I woke up, and all of the comments had detached from my posts. They were just free-floating, and it was horrifying. Thankfully, I was able to back up to yesterday and resolve that issue, but this is the fourth time that’s happened, so I had to make a decision about the size of my database.
The thing is there were three large sections in the database: posts, comments, and users. I had no interest in removing content or user comments, which meant that if I want to keep my database even reasonably healthy that I had no choice but to remove the membership option. Initially, I made membership an option on the site because we ran a private chat room on it. That chatroom is no longer on the site, and I’m not running a forum on in it either, so there’s no real reason to have a membership exclusive to the site. This was not some “knee-jerk” temper tantrum on my part. Really.
Readers can still comment, so no worries on that front. Hopefully, this will resolve the issues with the database, and I won’t have to rebuild the whole damn thing from the bottom up.
Rough Trade is going very well. I’m a little over 10k into my own project, and it’s just day 5, so I feel pretty great about it even if I still kind of hate my zero draft for the project. The podcast has taken a back seat to writing over the last few weeks though I do have a few to edit and publish.
I’ve been streaming Halo: The Master Chief Collection on the CrossRoads Discord server, and I’m considering playing some Sims 4 as well. It’s been fun, and it’s been keeping my brain off the current topics, which is good because I don’t need to fixate.
I’m working on an original science fiction novella project and pushed over 25k last week before RT started. I love my new idea and the characters. It has a lot of potential for exploration and different kinds of relationships. I have plans for five other novellas so far and lots of characters to explore and play with.
The podcast is now fully syndicated as far as I can tell. If I’m not hitting a major service/app you prefer feel free to comment here and let me know. I’ll certainly try to get my RSS feed fed into it. You can use the podcast player on my site as well without impacting my bandwidth at all so no worries on that front.
