* * * *

Harry Potter didn’t remember his mother or father but his life living with his aunt and uncle had been okay. More, he knew, for the fact that they knew better than to mistreat an online Guide. The letter for Hogwarts hadn’t been much of a surprise. Rowan, his spirit animal, had told him all about his magical parents and the legacy he had waiting on him in the magical world. Vernon and Petunia had practically begged him to open the letter when he hesitated. The twenty-four/seven responsibility of taking care of a minor Sentinel or Guide was an immense burden, and they resented it.

The Dursleys didn’t love him—Harry wasn’t all that bothered, but the people at the Burton Foundation found it very vexing. Since the law didn’t require love, they’d never tried to remove him from the tidy little house on Privet Drive. Rowan thought that there might be some magical influence in play, but he didn’t know what. A Sentinel/Guide pair had followed him and Hagrid into Diagon Alley and kept watch over him the entire time he was there. He appreciated their care and their help in carrying his things back home once Hagrid was gone. Neither were much impressed with the owl he’d gotten which amused Harry to no end. Sentinels and Guides rarely ever indulged in pets but Harry hadn’t had the heart to refuse her. Hagrid had been so pleased to buy him a birthday present.

So nearly a month after he’d received his letter, Harry was on the Hogwarts Express with his trunk, his owl that he’d named Hedwig, and Rowan. The silver and grey wolf had caused quite a stir on the platform in front of the train, but his presence had been enough to deter any interaction.

The door opened, and Harry looked up from his reading to see a girl. A lovely solid white wolf was pressed against her leg. She blushed furiously at the sight of him, and Harry felt his empathy stir. The desire to offer her comfort immediately stunned him—he’d never even been tempted to do such a thing with the other online children he’d met at the Foundation.

“Hi,” she said and slowly pulled the door shut behind her. “I’m…Hermione Granger.”

Harry stood, and Rowan chuffed slightly as he nudged him forward. “I’m Harry Potter.”

Her cheeks darkened further as she nodded. “I saw you on the platform with…” She trailed off and looked at his spirit guide. “I didn’t know if I should show mine, so I asked Marlowe to hide.”

“His name is Rowan,” Harry said and let his fingers clutch briefly in his spirit’s guide fur before he took one more step and offered his Sentinel his hand. “I’ve been looking for you.”

Hermione’s eyes brightened, and her shoulders relaxed as she took the hand he offered. “I’ve been looking for you, too, Harry.”

  4. Beautiful. Adorable.

  5. Kudos great first meeting.

  6. Lovely. As if we’d get any less from you. The fact that you can tell so much of a story in less than 500 words continues to floor me. 🙂

  7. Beautifully written and so sweet.

  8. Loved it!

  9. Awesome! Simple, sweet, fantastic!

  10. Awwwwwwwwwwww!!!!!! That was so sweet.

  11. Oh, that’s so darn sweet! A perfect mid-morning break read on a rainy Friday. <3 Thank you!

  13. That was lovely and very sweet – thank you for sharing it.

  14. Lovely! Will you be doing evil author day this month Keira?

  15. So cute!

  16. This is very sweet. And made me nostalgic — I had a grey horse named Rowan, who wasn’t a spirit guide, but was very loving. Anyway, thanks for sharing. I love your H/H stories — you’ve successfully turned me on to the HP fandom (either H/H or H/D). I didn’t *need* another fandom but, oh well.

  17. LOVE this gentle and sweet first meeting between Harry and Hermione. beautiful!

  18. Awww, very sweet. Thanks so much!

  19. Adorable. 🙂

  20. Harry being an online Guide and therefore protected (though not loved), him also knowing about magic before his letter arrives and Harry and Hermione making that early and profound connection has blown everyone’s plans for their savior to smithereens and they don’t even know it. Love it.

  21. What a lovely first meeting. Thank you.

  22. Tiny adorable guide & sentinel are tiny AND adorable!!!

  23. Such a lovely first meeting.

  24. Very sweet!

  25. This is so sweet! I also love how this will bypass both Ron and Draco. They’ll both take one look at two wolves and probably just shut up. If they are stupid enough to be rude or insulting I get they’d both pee themselves while running down the aisle which is just the loveliest mental picture for me. That’s one of my favorite things about your short stories, there’s always so much that we can imagine and you make such great visual imagery. Thanks again for being your awesome self.

  26. I love this! Harry as a guide and Hermione as his Sentinel is brilliant and I would love more of this. I like that Harry being a guide require monitoring so that the Dursleys couldn’t abuse him. Thank goodness. Thank you for writing.

  27. Aww so sweet and adorable.
