OCSP Response Error

Reading Time: 1 Minutes

All of my sites have SSL certificates and in most browsers that’s fine. In Firefox, it is increasingly becoming a problem. I cannot fix this error for you. Firefox has an outdated security protocol and it cannot handle OCSP stapling. This has been a problem off and on since 2014. They clearly do not intend on fixing it.

If you’re getting the following Error code:
MOZILLA_PKIX_ERROR_OCSP_RESPONSE_FOR_CERT_MISSING

Then you need to read this article and follow the instructions. This is not an error I can fix for you since it’s native to the Firefox browser. If you need to turn of OSCP stapling on the mobile version of Firefox you’ll need to use Firefox Nightly (the developer version) as the regular version of Firefox won’t allow it.

  1. I quit using Firefox due to this issue and a few others. Sorry you are being hassled about their level of stupid.

  2. Thank you for the link!

  3. OCSP Stapling is enabled by default in Firefox version 3.0 and above. If you’re getting this error message, you need to restart and update Firefox.

    • That works sometimes but it’s not a permanent solution and it doesn’t work on the regular version of mobile Firefox at all.

      • Yeah, just ran into that, too. Yesterday, everything was fine.
Strangely, though, it works if I don’t use the “Try again” button, but wait a minute or so and then go back to the original link in the notification, then the site loads as usual (laptop, not mobile device).
Will still restart Firefox as soon as I’ve gone through and closed the two dozen or so open tabs …

  4. Hi. I love your work. Is it possible for you to write something in the Top Gun: Maverick universe, particularly a Hangman/Rooster pairing?

    • I’ve not even watched that movie as I kind of can’t stand to watch Tom Cruise on screen. I doubt, seriously, that I’ll end up in that fandom but weirder things have happened.

  5. Thanks to let us know. I use Firefox and have never ran into this problem but I’ll keep the warning in mind.

  6. Always knew I had a reason to hate Firefox!

    • It has its faults, but I still prefer it over the incessant ads I get with Chrome, or Edge …

(Incidentally, after having had the abovementioned problems this morning as well, now Firefox is working as usual — no problem at all. Fingers crossed it stays that way!)

  7. I’ve noticed that the problem almost never lasts over 24 hrs for a given site and then that site is fine. It’s been working its way through the sites Keira hosts and, I think, Rough Trade was the last… Like Keira said, it’s a Firefox issue – not a Keira issue.

  8. Thanks for the heads up. I’d been having problems accessing some sites without any real error messages. I hadn’t thought to try a different browser. Switched to Safari for those sites and now I’m back to reading fanfic with no issues.

Thanks for all the great writing and for the tip to help me access it again!

  9. For all those who are having issues reaching the work around listed in the last part of the article Keira posted (Android Firefox).

“Typing chrome://geckoview/content/config.xhtml takes you to the same page that “about:config” does in Firefox for laptops.”

This worked for my phone’s mobile version and everything now works for me. Hope this helps anyone who might have had issues disabling on the mobile version.

NOTE FROM KEIRA: I cannot verify this method is safe to do as I’ve not done it and have no idea of the impact it will have on your browser or device which is why it’s not included in the original post.
