Reading Time: 5 MinutesTitle: Breaking Point Author: Keira Marcos Fandom: Stargate: Atlantis Series: Sentinel of Atlantis Series Order: Missing Scene from The Aftermath Pairing: Weir/Wallace Summary: Elizabeth Weir awakens as a Sentinel in a moment of crisis. * * * * The storm hadn’t been a surprise. The Sentinels had felt it for weeks—building in the atmosphere. Atlantis had readily supplied weather data when Radek asked, it was no question how she catered to him. They’d prepared for it in every way they could. Evacuating the Athosians to the city and launching the shield using the generators from Sateda had been risky so most of the civilians and the Athosians had went through the gate to an allied planet. At least, John had considered the people an ally. The Athosians had traded with them for generations. Cameron and Vala were in a Jumper above the planet—monitoring the progress of the storm and gathering as much data as they could on what the geeks had labeled a “super hurricane”. Lorne had taken command of everyone off world—taking all of the civilians that weren’t remotely useful with him and the majority of the Marines to protect them. This was supposed to be a fucking cake walk. It had been a cake walk until he’d heard the report of weapons fire and lost the heartbeats of three of the Marines who had been on guard duty in the gateroom. John pulled his Guide close and turned so he was between them in whatever…

Meanwhile, Matthew Sheppard has to make a choice about his status at the SGC and in the Navy. Jack O’Neill realizes something important about Charlie and goes to visit his ex-wife. * * * * The water was unbearable but not being clean was even more of an issue. Chase curled his fists against the wall and took the punishing spray of lukewarm water while his body shivered with pain. He swallowed a groan and took a deep breath as his heartrate elevated and adrenalin spiked as his senses processed the stinging pain sweeping over his skin. The mission hadn’t been simple but it certainly hadn’t been the kind of clusterfuck of epic proportions he’d been warned about before he ever stepped through the gate. The planet hadn’t been that far off Earth-norm but it didn’t take much to utterly fuck up a Sentinel. He took a deep breath, pulling in the damp air that did nothing to sooth the burning deep in his chest. Chase had never regretting bonding with Wil more—and he’d had room for a lot of regrets. They hadn’t been a good fit as Wil had been only a level two Guide and Chase had…

On Earth, Jack and Andy meet up with something entirely unexpected on the streets of Colorado Springs. * * * * Rodney was uncomfortable behind the desk he and John were supposed to share in the office above the gateroom. The fact was that he fully expected John to take care of much of what was their dual role because it fell in line with his duties as the military leader. But, John and the rest of the Sentinels from Earth were off-world with Ronon and Tyre doing some warrior-Sentinel bonding thing to do with his being their Alpha that he really didn’t understand and none of them had been able to offer a satisfying explanation. Even Radek and Elizabeth had gone through the gate—leaving all the Guides behind. It was disconcerting to say the least. Vala and Jennifer were sitting on the stairs in front of the gate glaring at it like it was the very root of evil. Graham and David were sitting on the command deck despite the fact that neither one of them had to damn thing to do…

On Earth, David Sheppard moves to Denver so that his son will be close to his father and Jack O’Neill. * * * * – David Sheppard shoved his hands into his pockets and frowned as he glanced around the house. “I fully expect to have to do heavy renovations on any house I purchase, Mr. Jordan, but I thought I was pretty clear with you about my needs on the phone.” “Mr. Sheppard…” Jordan trailed off at the glare he was offered. “Yes, you were clear and I’m doing my level best to meet those expectations. All of the houses we’ve visited today are at least three miles off any major road way, all built within the last ten years, and situated on no less than four acres.” “And no foam insulation.” “It is a very difficult requirement to meet, I’m afraid.” “There is no choice in the matter,” David shook his head. “This house is a no. I’d have to gut the walls and the floors.” “The floors were…

It promises to fuck up our self-perceptions for the foreseeable future so be prepared.” Jennifer put her tablet PC down on the table in front of her and picked up the remote for the big view screen for the conference room. “Sentinels and Guides as we know them today began on Sateda. The Matter of Female Sentinels by Keira Marcos “The Sentinel is in her fifth Guide search since she came online. She is a Major in the United States Marines and is a level five across the board. She has been online for nearly ten years. We are hoping to make a match for her today so she will be taking her time with each of you. I expect you all to be respectful, touch only when she offers, and keep your disappointments to yourself when you’re dismissed from consideration.” Allison Porter had heard variations same speech a lot. She’d participated in sixteen Guide searches since she’d come online but this was the first time she’d encountered a female Sentinel. She didn’t have any illusions about being picked. Female Sentinels just didn’t choose female Guides. The only reason she was even in the room was that she already in the Center participating in a different Guide search when the female Sentinel had arrived. Her thoughts drifted back to the other Sentinel, the one that had rejected with…

His records with the Air Force were sealed by the Pentagon six months ago after his reassignment to Colorado. I’ve been calling people for two months trying to get to someone who knows where he is and there is nothing.” “John made his choice,” Patrick murmured. “And he could’ve come home at any time. He hasn’t… it isn’t like I haven’t reached out to him time and time again only to be ignored.” “He could be dead,” Matt snapped and stood up from the couch. “He’s dead and the Air Force is hiding so they don’t have to report a Sentinel…

Summary: “The life of a soldier is defined by discipline, shaped by duty, and immortalized in acts of courage in the face of the most dangerous situations.” * * * * The first time John heard a woman weeping, it was his mother. It was the day she’d realized out her five year old son had come online. An ache had built in his chest in response, tangling into a hot, tight knot of pain that still lingered with the other memories of his mother. As proud as she was to have birthed a Sentinel, his mother had been truly unprepared for him to come online before the onset of puberty. His father had held her, rocked her gently while he promised her fiercely that it wasn’t her fault. John didn’t think that Patrick Sheppard meant anything more than that—at least not now that he was an adult but as a child he’d often wondered if his daddy had thought it was his fault instead. He’d never doubted his father’s love but some part of Patrick Sheppard had been unable to fully embrace the only…

Summary: Bates comes online during a hostage situation off-world, Tyre and Peter take some time to themselves on the mainland, and John has an unexpected visitor. * * * * Dean Bates sat down on his footlocker in the large room the entire city used for mission prep. The men under him in the company had taken his potential change of status better than he’d suspected they would but then John Sheppard had worked hard to make sure he didn’t bring any assholes on the expedition. His Sentinel gifts were hovering on the edge of his mind. Graham had come online in his sleep over a week ago. Dean hadn’t been able to do anything but hold his Guide and talk him through the construction of his primary shield. It had rankled but he’d had no choice but to allow Sheppard and McKay to come to his quarters to help Graham. It had been relieving, however, that they’d included him as much as possible in the process and never made him feel like he wasn’t enough to help Graham through the event. Now, sixteen days later, he felt close and…

Summary: The city forces Tyre to come to terms with his needs and the temptation he’s been resisting. Meanwhile, John and Rodney are off world with Cameron and Vala to investigate an abandoned world with an Ancient lab and find something disturbing. * * * * Elizabeth would’ve loved to throw aside the two sticks Cadman had forced into her hands and just punch the female Sentinel in the face. Since the aggression was contrary to her accepted self-image, she was at a loss as to how to deal with it and she wasn’t ready to admit how… hostile she felt all the time lately. She had been assured that it was normal for an emerging Sentinel to be on edge and even at times violent in the right circumstances especially considering how dangerous their situation was. No matter how much her mind might be protesting the changes in her biology—the rest of her was on board. If she didn’t think about it—it was easy to surrender herself to sparring and the physical…

What she finds surprises the hell out of her. * * * * “Dr. Wallace, you were going to report on Sergeant Campbell?” John questioned with a raised eyebrow. “Does he remember anything more about his experience with the Wraith or why he left his quarters?” Simon shook his head. “No. I’ve been reviewing the research on Wraith in the Ancient database and I believe he wasn’t in control of his mind or body during the time. I think he managed to break free of the Wraith’s mind control when he saw the creature because it’s the first thing he remembers after going to sleep. He doesn’t have a history of sleep walking but his mother is a documented sensitive. I spoke with Dr. Keller and we double checked his blood work to make sure we didn’t miss anything in his testing. Nothing popped beyond the fact that we believe he would be a great candidate for the ATA gene therapy she’s developing.” “And we can give that to him without it turning him…” John sighed. “He doesn’t have any Satedian DNA at all?” “None,” Simon assured. “We’ve been very careful to test everyone twice for…

Not the ATA gene—that’s artificial but another gene that most of the Sentinels on Earth have. Probably upwards of ninety-five percent of Sentinels have it but there are a few who don’t and you’re one of them. You do have the gene we’ve identified that come from the Satedians. And you have a latent ATA gene.” Bates exhaled sharply and looked out over the ocean. “When you brought me out here—I thought it was to discuss Stackhouse and Markham.” “Are they a problem?” John asked mildly. “Not for me, but they could stand to be a little more discreet. This is a surprise.” John offered him a small smile. “I hope I’m not disturbing your morning. I know you’re both off duty.” “No, please come in.” Simon motioned him in as Elizabeth slipped into their bedroom to throw on the rest of her clothes. “Coffee?” “No, but thank you. I have to watch my caffeine intake. Sometimes it makes me edgy for the wrong reasons.” John sat down at the table that Simon motioned to. “But the Athosian tea is nice.” Simon nodded. “I enjoy it but it has an adverse effect on Elizabeth.” He grinned then. “Well, not exactly adverse but she certainly can’t indulge in it if she’s going to be out in public.” He brought a…

John Sheppard eyed his fellow Sentinel with shrewd eyes. “He’s the head of Botany, Radek. He’ll be the authority on our dietary needs when it comes to food crops off world. Teyla and Ronon are both confident that a trip to this trading world would be to our benefit. Unfortunately, the trade fair is scheduled to move within the week and it could be weeks before they are established elsewhere. We need to go there and meet with potential trade partners.” Radek pressed his lips together. “David is… only rated for a 9mm and he is curious.” He waved one hand. “I should think to leash him before letting him through the gate.” John grinned. “Like a kid in a shopping mall?” “Yes.” Radek pointed at him. “Exactly that. She took up the defensive position she’d been taught earlier in the morning and took a deep breath. “Again,” she agreed. Teyla advanced and the striking of wood against wood filled the gym. They’d gathered quite a crowd, including their own Sentinels who were standing sentry on either side of the room—alternately glaring at each other and then the crowd of Marines who had gathered to watch the two alien women go at it. She sacrificed her thigh to a vicious blow and in doing so positioned herself to hook one foot around Teyla’s leg and send them both sprawling. Rods scattered in four directions as they hit the floor. Vala pinned her with a smirk and Teyla lay there for a few seconds, breathless and then she started to laugh. “Well done. You must teach me that.” Vala rolled off of her and to her feet in one fluid motion.…

He sort of missed Walter a lot and wished he’d stolen him on the way through the gate to Pegasus. He and Walter had spent many a crazy ass night dialing the gate when they’d been looking for Vala. Chuck, the Canadian, had his own charm but he wasn’t Walter. He didn’t smell like coffee and chocolate chip cookies like the tight-assed Air Force man that was Sergeant Walter Harriman. John trotted down the small set of stairs from his office and entered the command deck area above the gate. “Cameron isn’t due to check in for three hours.” “I know, sir.” Chuck took a deep breath. “I’m receiving an IDC; it’s the one you left with the Athosians. I’ve opened a channel but there is nothing but static.” John activated his own radio. “This is Colonel Sheppard, please respond.” The scream of a Guide in distress was one that any Sentinel could recognize and it chilled him to the…

He raised an eyebrow at his fellow Sentinel and the much larger man just shrugged and holstered his weapon. He glanced towards Teyla and found her dressed similarly to her Sentinel—complete with a pulse pistol he refused to envy on general principal. Though he had whined, in private, to his own Guide extensively about his lack of a truly sci-fi kind of weapon. It was hard to be an intergalactic explorer without some kind of energy gun, John was absolutely positive on this subject. “The people on this planet are pre-industrial and their science is nothing like you mentioned wanting but they have some ruins left by the Ancestors.” Ronon reached out and touched his Guide, drawing her forward slightly. “Teyla’s people have traded with them for many years.” John inclined his head at Teyla but focused on Ronon. “In our society there are rules that govern how another Sentinel can interact with a bonded Guide. We haven’t discussed such protocols and Dr. Weir handled our last meeting entirely. We should probably get that…

Then for the twenty minutes after that, it had been a source of honest to God ‘woohoo’ fun. After that, he’d forced himself to actually start collecting data on it. Of course, in retrospect he should have told his Sentinel what he was up to—but he got caught up in the excitement. So, when he let Peter Grodin push him off the balcony in the gateroom he really wasn’t thinking about how it would look to anyone else, including his Sentinel. He scrambled to his feet just as John hit the gateroom floor, with murder in his eye and Grodin in his sights. Rodney blinked. “No, wait, John!” He got between his Sentinel and Grodin. “It’s an experiment. He only did what I asked him to do!” John reached out for him, anger bleeding away but concern still simmering all around him, and actually hissed when he encountered the energy field of the shield. “What the hell, McKay? I’ve been looking for you everywhere!” “Oh, Ancient personal shield.” Sheppard pressed against the shield and it shimmered around McKay. “Take it off. Take…

They learn the name of a new enemy and a new threat for Earth. * * * * John tapped his ink pen on the desk he shared with McKay. The office above the gateroom had an excellent overview of the area and afforded him a great location to look both like he knew what the fuck he was doing and keep an eye on how truly messed up things were. Eight days in a new galaxy, and the entire expedition was looking a little ragged around the edges. He knew most of the mundanes weren’t sleeping well. He tracked their movements around the city as they paced the halls late into the night. “You even look stunningly beautiful when you brood,” McKay leaned against the doorway. “Maybe even more so, I’m starting to get why romance heroes are always brooding and depressed.” John favored his Guide with a smile. “Hey, how are things going down there?” “The isolation room is almost complete. The city control Chair wakes a part of Radek Zelenka that should have remained dormant and the consequences ripple throughout the entire expedition. * * * * “Okay, let’s take stock.” John slid into a chair in the large conference room they’d discovered just off the gate room. Rodney looked at him but didn’t smile. They were all so beyond smiling at this point. “We are under water, the shield is failing because we don’t have enough power to run it effectively, half the city has already flooded because of it, and the ZPM is almost depleted. The naquadah generators we brought with us aren’t going help on the shield front. In short, we’re fucked.” It was concise and horrible, just what he’d expected from his Guide. John leaned back in the chair and mentally reached out for the city. They’d discovered that the lack of power didn’t make for the best connection but the city was definitely talking to them on some level. It reacted to their desires and needs pretty much effortlessly—opening doors and turning on lights as requested with just…

The mission to Atlantis is their mutual path and they will gather the strongest, brightest, and best for the mission that will take them to another galaxy. Author’s Note: While this is a Sentinel/Stargate: Atlantis crossover – I’ve played fast and loose with pretty much everything from the way a Sentinel/Guide pairing works to the events leading up the Atlantis mission, character ages, etc. Basically, anything was fair game as I created this world. This is definitely AU in every single way. * * * * “There is an unbonded Guide here.” Lt. Colonel Samantha Carter paused and turned to face the pilot she was giving a tour of Stargate Command. He’d been located through his DNA. Major John Sheppard had the Ancient gene and was from all reports a low level Sentinel. He’d barely registered on the scale and had eventually been evaluated at a level two out of six. There was no way he should’ve been able to sense an unbonded Guide in the Mountain. She could barely feel Dr. McKay and she rated at level four on the Sentinel scale. There were 15 floors between their current location and the…
