What she finds surprises the hell out of her. * * * * “Dr. Wallace, you were going to report on Sergeant Campbell?” John questioned with a raised eyebrow. “Does he remember anything more about his experience with the Wraith or why he left his quarters?” Simon shook his head. “No. I’ve been reviewing the research on Wraith in the Ancient database and I believe he wasn’t in control of his mind or body during the time. I think he managed to break free of the Wraith’s mind control when he saw the creature because it’s the first thing he remembers after going to sleep. He doesn’t have a history of sleep walking but his mother is a documented sensitive. I spoke with Dr. Keller and we double checked his blood work to make sure we didn’t miss anything in his testing. Nothing popped beyond the fact that we believe he would be a great candidate for the ATA gene therapy she’s developing.” “And we can give that to him without it turning him…” John sighed. “He doesn’t have any Satedian DNA at all?” “None,” Simon assured. “We’ve been very careful to test everyone twice for…

Not the ATA gene—that’s artificial but another gene that most of the Sentinels on Earth have. Probably upwards of ninety-five percent of Sentinels have it but there are a few who don’t and you’re one of them. You do have the gene we’ve identified that come from the Satedians. And you have a latent ATA gene.” Bates exhaled sharply and looked out over the ocean. “When you brought me out here—I thought it was to discuss Stackhouse and Markham.” “Are they a problem?” John asked mildly. “Not for me, but they could stand to be a little more discreet. I won’t tolerate bullshit from the men under me and they know it. As far as I know, we don’t have any that would have…

John learns that he has three latent Sentinels on the mission and must determine how best to deal with the likelihood that their circumstances alone might bring them online. * * * * Simon raised an eyebrow and glanced over at his shoulder at his wife. “Colonel Sheppard. This is a surprise.” John offered him a small smile. “I hope I’m not disturbing your morning. I know you’re both off duty.” “No, please come in.” Simon motioned him in as Elizabeth slipped into their bedroom to throw on the rest of her clothes. “Coffee?” “No, but thank you. I have to watch my caffeine intake. Sometimes it makes me edgy for the wrong reasons.” John sat down at the table that Simon motioned to. “But the Athosian tea is nice.” Simon nodded. “I enjoy it but it has an adverse effect on Elizabeth.” He grinned then. “Well, not exactly adverse but she certainly can’t indulge in it if she’s going to be out in public.” He brought a…

John Sheppard eyed his fellow Sentinel with shrewd eyes. “He’s the head of Botany, Radek. He’ll be the authority on our dietary needs when it comes to food crops off world. Teyla and Ronon are both confident that a trip to this trading world would be to our benefit. Unfortunately, the trade fair is scheduled to move within the week and it could be weeks before they are established elsewhere. We need to go there and meet with potential trade partners.” Radek pressed his lips together. “David is… only rated for a 9mm and he is curious.” He waved one hand. “I should think to leash him before letting him through the gate.” John grinned. “Like a kid in a shopping mall?” “Yes.” Radek pointed at him. “Exactly that. He’ll drive me mad, Colonel.” “I understand your concern, Radek but every…

He’d learned along the way not to set himself up for heartache. He was standing at a view window with his Dom when they left hyperspace and achieved orbit around Lantea. He’d seen a few planets from space—for the most part they always looked inviting. Even if they rarely were. “The Ancients certainly liked their planets big and blue.” John laughed softly. “Yeah, they do. We rarely encounter a world that isn’t beautiful at least from an environmental perspective.” He settled one hand on Rodney’s hip and let his chin rest on his sub’s shoulder. “I’m going to ask someone to bring a Jumper up for us. I want you to see her the way I do when I come back from the mainland.” “That sounds good.” Rodney cleared his throat and took a deep breath. “I’ll…

There was a Marine on the front porch of McKay’s house with a handful of tissue and red eyes. Sheppard suppressed a grin as he came up the stairs. “Please tell me he didn’t make you cry too, Corporal.” The Marine sneezed loudly and took a big deep wet breath that made John grimace. “No, sir. Your… Dr. McKay found a cat on the side of the road on the way home and insisted we stop and pick it up. It’s… huge, sir. I tried to convince him that it could have diseases or maybe it isn’t even a cat but he wouldn’t listen to me.” The Marine sniffled again. “I came out here because I’m allergic. Drake is inside.” “A cat?” John repeated. “You let him pick up a stray animal off the side of the road?” The Marine blushed. “I tried to drive past it, sir but he threatened to maim me for life if I didn’t turn around for the animal.” John swallowed back a laugh and shook his head. “Yeah, okay. We have a prototype with us but it could be more than a year before we can do any testing.” She wiggled in further and dragged her DeWalt with her. “Here, look at this.” Matt grinned as she deftly took another panel off. “Why engineering?” “Because I like to know how things work,” Miko…

She brushed pale blonde hair over her shoulder and regarded the camera seriously. “The following interview is not appropriate for young viewers and I encourage parental guidance due to the discussion of violent child abuse and adult language.” The scene fades and Iris is standing in front of a silent grand piano. “Colonel John Sheppard tells me that Dr. McKay plays this instrument often in the afternoons but we were unable to talk him into playing for us today. Many of you might recognize the instrument from his performance during his interview with the Science Channel.” She waved a hand and the camera spanned around the large, open room. “It’s the center of this large room that both Dr. McKay and Colonel Sheppard admit to favoring in their home.” She moved away from the…

So I chose not to interrupt them.” John lifted an eyebrow and glanced at Matthew. “Earlier you were talking about the fact that you and the Major Hughes were submissive. Do you have a problem being in command of Dominants?” “Not at all,” Matt said as he slouched down on the couch with his computer. “I can’t say the same for some Dominants I’ve served with but I don’t take shit from lower ranking officers. I never have. Of course, the Navy has never rated me for discipline and certainly never will. I assumed I would elevate any punishments to you or Major Lorne.” John nodded. “Yeah, I normally handle discipline on Atlantis—at least I did when Marshall was in charge unless the infraction was severe and then they just wished I was doing the work. Marshall specialized in bloodletting and he never spared the rod.” Matthew nodded. “Lorne would discipline me, I take it?” John frowned and considered that. “Yeah, I guess so.” He glanced at Lorne who looked intensely uncomfortable. “Major?” “Sir.” Evan blew out a breath. “I don’t think I could. I’m rated for the flogger and the strap but he’s a Geisha for fuck’s sake.” Matthew laughed.…

There was an emergency with the gate and O’Neill was forced to recall her to deal with it. He didn’t want to bother you and Rodney on your family trip.” Rodney inched closer to John aware that his Dom was still boiling over on the inside when it came to his ex-wife. “It’ll be fine, John.” John shook his head, his jaw tightening. “I don’t need to be in a room with her Elizabeth. I don’t think I can trust myself around her.” Elizabeth blinked in surprise but looked closely at Rodney’s pale features and hit the stop button on the elevator. “What’s going on?” John shook his head and closed his eyes. Summary: John and Rodney make time to see both of their families before they leave for Atlantis. * * * * Rodney had a lot of money. He’d worked in private and government research in Canada and in the United States since he’d graduated with his first degree. Mostly it sat in a bank account and he bought cool things that he liked. He’d been thinking about buying a house so he could live off base—something he hadn’t done since his divorce from Sam. The main reason he hadn’t was mostly because buying a house for just himself sort of meant he was giving up having another Dom in his life. Granted, he’d paid for Sam’s house but it had been bought and remodeled to suit her exactly. He’d catered to every wish when it had come to the home they would share and put it in her name without blinking an eye. He didn’t even really regret that part—she’d certainly wish she didn’t have a house worth a couple of million dollars when it came time to pay property…

The first couple of days with Sam had been on their honeymoon. He wondered now how Carter had let him get away with that—withholding his acceptance of her collar until he put a wedding band on her finger. She’d never fought the formal commitment ceremony and beyond a few snide comments about his arrogance. Sam had made the entire process rather easy all things considered. The only time she’d balked had been when it had come time to sign the sub contract he’d refused to move forward without. If she’d been pissed about it later, she never let on and their honeymoon had been full of sex and what he’d thought was love. Even now, he cringed at his own stupidity when it…

She took up the defensive position she’d been taught earlier in the morning and took a deep breath. “Again,” she agreed. Teyla advanced and the striking of wood against wood filled the gym. They’d gathered quite a crowd, including their own Sentinels who were standing sentry on either side of the room—alternately glaring at each other and then the crowd of Marines who had gathered to watch the two alien women go at it. She sacrificed her thigh to a vicious blow and in doing so positioned herself to hook one foot around Teyla’s leg and send them both sprawling. Rods scattered in four directions as they hit the floor. Vala pinned her with a smirk and Teyla lay there for a few seconds, breathless and then she started to laugh. “Well done. You must teach me that.” Vala rolled off of her and to her feet in one fluid motion.…

He sort of missed Walter a lot and wished he’d stolen him on the way through the gate to Pegasus. He and Walter had spent many a crazy ass night dialing the gate when they’d been looking for Vala. Chuck, the Canadian, had his own charm but he wasn’t Walter. He didn’t smell like coffee and chocolate chip cookies like the tight-assed Air Force man that was Sergeant Walter Harriman. John trotted down the small set of stairs from his office and entered the command deck area above the gate. “Cameron isn’t due to check in for three hours.” “I know, sir.” Chuck took a deep breath. “I’m receiving an IDC; it’s the one you left with the Athosians. I’ve opened a channel but there is nothing but static.” John activated his own radio. “This is Colonel Sheppard, please respond.” The scream of a Guide in distress was one that any Sentinel could recognize and it chilled him to the…

He raised an eyebrow at his fellow Sentinel and the much larger man just shrugged and holstered his weapon. He glanced towards Teyla and found her dressed similarly to her Sentinel—complete with a pulse pistol he refused to envy on general principal. Though he had whined, in private, to his own Guide extensively about his lack of a truly sci-fi kind of weapon. It was hard to be an intergalactic explorer without some kind of energy gun, John was absolutely positive on this subject. “The people on this planet are pre-industrial and their science is nothing like you mentioned wanting but they have some ruins left by the Ancestors.” Ronon reached out and touched his Guide, drawing her forward slightly. “Teyla’s people have traded with them for many years.” John inclined his head at Teyla but focused on Ronon. “In our society there are rules that govern how another Sentinel can interact with a bonded Guide. We haven’t discussed such protocols and Dr. Weir handled our last meeting entirely. We should probably get that…

Then for the twenty minutes after that, it had been a source of honest to God ‘woohoo’ fun. After that, he’d forced himself to actually start collecting data on it. Of course, in retrospect he should have told his Sentinel what he was up to—but he got caught up in the excitement. So, when he let Peter Grodin push him off the balcony in the gateroom he really wasn’t thinking about how it would look to anyone else, including his Sentinel. He scrambled to his feet just as John hit the gateroom floor, with murder in his eye and Grodin in his sights. Rodney blinked. “No, wait, John!” He got between his Sentinel and Grodin. “It’s an experiment. He only did what I asked him to do!” John reached out for him, anger bleeding away but concern still simmering all around him, and actually hissed when he encountered the energy field of the shield. “What the hell, McKay? I’ve been looking for you everywhere!” “Oh, Ancient personal shield.” Sheppard pressed against the shield and it shimmered around McKay. “Take it off. Take…

They learn the name of a new enemy and a new threat for Earth. * * * * John tapped his ink pen on the desk he shared with McKay. The office above the gateroom had an excellent overview of the area and afforded him a great location to look both like he knew what the fuck he was doing and keep an eye on how truly messed up things were. Eight days in a new galaxy, and the entire expedition was looking a little ragged around the edges. He knew most of the mundanes weren’t sleeping well. He tracked their movements around the city as they paced the halls late into the night. “You even look stunningly beautiful when you brood,” McKay leaned against the doorway. “Maybe even more so, I’m starting to get why romance heroes are always brooding and depressed.” John favored his Guide with a smile. “Hey, how are things going down there?” “The isolation room is almost complete. The city control Chair wakes a part of Radek Zelenka that should have remained dormant and the consequences ripple throughout the entire expedition. * * * * “Okay, let’s take stock.” John slid into a chair in the large conference room they’d discovered just off the gate room. Rodney looked at him but didn’t smile. They were all so beyond smiling at this point. “We are under water, the shield is failing because we don’t have enough power to run it effectively, half the city has already flooded because of it, and the ZPM is almost depleted. The naquadah generators we brought with us aren’t going help on the shield front. In short, we’re fucked.” It was concise and horrible, just what he’d expected from his Guide. John leaned back in the chair and mentally reached out for the city. They’d discovered that the lack of power didn’t make for the best connection but the city was definitely talking to them on some level. It reacted to their desires and needs pretty much effortlessly—opening doors and turning on lights as requested with just…

He is the fifth executive from Pan-Tech to be named in the investigation. Pan-Tech made headlines earlier in the month when it’s CEO, Darren Franks, was found dead in his Florida home, the victim of an apparent home invasion. No suspects have been identified in that crime and investigators haven’t been forthcoming on any evidence left at the scene.” Rodney turned off the television in his office and turned in his chair to look at John. “Well?” “We have four left. What does your gut tell you?” “Armand went to ground shortly after the Justice Department picked up the investigation I fed them. I consider him a high level threat. Once we get a location on him, I want him dealt with.” “Not a problem.” John murmured. “Anyone else?” “None of the others have the finances or the intelligence to pull off anything I would consider a threat but I’m keeping an eye on them. I didn’t believe it, to be honest, and looked it up myself. However, you’ve always done amazing work for us, Doctor, and we appreciate it a great deal. Your work has made our intelligence operations safer and more effective. I get that we owe you.” “I want the names of the people who are in the Trust. I want their organizational hierarchy. I want to know where the money comes from. Who has political connections and what politicians are sitting in their pockets? It doesn’t matter to me who you have to go through or what you have to do to accomplish it. I’ve heard rumors but I want fact and I want it as soon as possible.” “I know they are pulling some strings trying to take your adopted child from you, but there are legal ways to deal with this.” “Our son cries himself to sleep every night, Cole. That’s absolutely none of your business. I don’t even discuss my ‘burgeoning sexuality’ with myself. I’m not even sure I have a ‘burgeoning sexuality’, I turned ten three days ago.” The state psychologist clicked his ink pen several times and cleared his throat. “Yes, I understand that the plans for your birthday party on Rodney’s private island were cancelled.” That earned him a glare. “Yeah, because of this crap with my ex-step Aunt. She filed some kind of injunction about my leaving the country or even the planet which ruined my field trip to Uranus. I had to write a research paper on that planet to earn a spot on the observation team and then they went without me because of that stupid injunction.” Which he was ashamed to admit had resulted him in throwing his first temper tantrum, ever, in front of his Dads. The conversation was obviously a serious one. He wondered briefly if he should just walk away but he pushed that aside. He was pretty much of the opinion that neither one of them got to keep secrets from him. “I was working in a lab in Siberia. I got a little pissed off at O’Neill and took a break from the SGC. Just a few months, helping the Russians on their Naquadah generator project. At the time, it was very important that we maintain a good relationship with them.” “Must have been cool to be on the ground level on that research.” “Yeah. It was,” Rodney admitted. “The Russians had a great need for power as you can imagine—big cold ass country they have.” He sighed and leaned back on his hands. “I pushed the scientists on the project hard because after about two weeks I was more than ready to come home but I knew I couldn’t come home until I was done.” “How long were you there?” “Close to six months at the end of it. We were working in an old nuclear power facility, dismantled but certainly full of dangerous crap. The Russians were kind of nonchalant about the disposal of nuclear waste during that time. I had a team of about ten scientists—none of…

Reading Time: 26 Minutes* * * * The alarm of an unscheduled activation had made John leave his office a quick pace but he hadn’t been really worried. There was always something going on in the gateroom and often an unscheduled activation just meant someone got done early and got to come home. So, when the IDC for SG1 came through and then Cameron Mitchell all but dragged his father through the event horizon—John was frozen for a second. Vala, Teal’c, Ronon, and Dr. Jackson came through the gate backwards, guns raised and still firing. “Close the iris!” Vala shouted. Cameron had Patrick Sheppard down on the floor by the time John shouldered through the Marines that stayed in the gateroom. Dr. Lam was close on his heels, and she shoved him bodily out of her way. “Patrick.” She dropped to her knees and started shouting at her team, while she opened his shirt and replaced Cameron Mitchell’s hand with her own. “What did you do?” “Just a flesh wound.” “I’ll be the fucking judge of that,” Carrie snapped. Her face tight with strain. “What the hell is wrong with the Sheppards? They just can’t seem to keep their blood…” She turned. “Miles, Dyson haul ass over here and get the Admiral off the goddamned floor!” The two medics snapped into action. “What happened?” Cameron took a deep breath. “He was stabbed. Negotiations went bad—he decided to leave. One of the men at the table decided that he should stay.”…

Reading Time: 27 MinutesPART THREE The party seemed out of place but neither John nor Rodney had it in them to deny the rest of the family the time especially when Sebastian seemed to get a little more excited as each guest arrived. John had no clue why there were five different kinds of cake and Sean blamed ‘the women’ and wouldn’t say which ones exactly. There was a stunning amount of food, beer, and people in his house and he found himself moving from group to group with McKay talking to them. “When did this become our life?” Rodney asked as they extracted themselves from a group of scientists from Area 51 and started towards the freaking President of the United States who was chatting with the Prime Minister of Canada and Sebastian. “The President is in our house.” “I know,” John said with a sigh as he pressed his hand against the small of McKay’s back and urged him across the room. “It’s insane. Good afternoon, sirs, I hope you’re enjoying the party.” “Always a pleasure to be in Colorado, John,” Henry Hayes said with a little laugh. “Your son is an amazing asset to have—he’s caught me and Jean up on all of the gossip about the majority of the people in this room. I think he’s smarter than the man I have in charge of the CIA.” “Of course he is,” Rodney muttered. “And don’t even think about trying to recruit him.” He held out his…

But, hey, these words are mine so don’t steal them and say they are yours. * * * * – The day John Sheppard had walked back into his life remained one of the best in his life. It had been several weeks after the Atlantis expedition had returned to Earth and Rodney hadn’t seen half the personnel that had survived in person. They’d been sequestered, protected from the political maneuverings of the IOA. Jack O’Neill had been vicious and unapologetic in his defense and sheltering of them—both the military and civilian personnel. Debriefings had been careful, controlled, and rigidly monitored by seasoned SGC personnel and hostility from the IOA had been met with stalling tactics on a level few on Earth had ever seen. Colonel John Sheppard had emerged from the process as the…

Reading Time: 36 MinutesPART TWO “NO! Don’t! Don’t touch me!” Patrick Sheppard jerked awake in an instant, decades of military training making him reach for his gun without hesitation. He was in the hall way seconds later, facing a few of security personnel and his son, David. They were all grim faced and standing in front of the suite of rooms that belonged to Sebastian. “What the hell?” he demanded. “Frost did a sweep of the rooms and then let Jennifer in,” David murmured and then lifted away from the wall where he was leaning, a 9mm still grasped in his hand as the door opened. Declan Frost slipped out of the room and shut the door. “Nightmare.” He leaned back against it briefly. “Night terrors, sir. Dr. Keller is with him.” Patrick shared a glanced with his son David and then took a deep breath. “He hasn’t… John didn’t mention this.” “This is the time he’s been without them since… well since he found them,” David murmured. “And he slips into their rooms a lot—sleeps curled up between them.” “I heard him like he was in the room with me,” Patrick snapped. “There is a monitoring system in his room—it responded to something he was screaming and activated the house wide intercom.” Patrick stared at him for a few seconds. “Excuse me?” “McKay had him say words like ‘no’ and ‘stop’ in different tones when he installed the internal security. Sebastian also has a safe word he can call…

Reading Time: 1 MinutesToday, though it was hardly the plan, I wrote the final three scenes for What Might Have Been– it’s in the story “Ring of FIre” which I have plotted out in my head but I’m no where near ready to write. But the last three scenes just came to me in a flash of inspiration. I’ll admit I cried while I wrote it. Don’t worry– I’m a firm believer in happily ever after but gosh did I make John work for it. I’ve come up with some great ideas for future AUs because of this series and I’ve got a lot of ideas jotted down for when I’m finished but a part of never really wants to finish it. I just want to keep writing for it forever but I do have a great idea for a second series with the same characters in the same universe– so we’ll see how that goes. My Sentinels of Atlantis series is bugging me and I’ve got a great idea for another AU that is a Sentinel/Criminal Minds/Stargate Fusion that will just not let me go at all. Tons of ideas and really so little time. I’m also tempted to dig out my old SG1 fanfic and polish it up. On other things– I think I’m going to take Vala and Daniel to Atlantis in the ‘Dark Places in the Soul Series’ and I’ve got a great story set up for John/Laura that will be heart breaking but lovely all…

Reading Time: 46 Minutes* * * * Three Days Later “Good afternoon, I am Lt. General Jack O’Neill and we would like to thank you all for coming.” Jack surveyed the crowd in his immediate vicinity. There were close to a thousand people on hand. Far more than they’d wanted and far less than had actually wanted to come to the what the press had dubbed ‘The Rising of the Phoenix’. “At Stargate Command, it is always a great day when we can welcome a new ship into service. Today, the very first X-500 will be released from the underground hangar where it has been constructed. Before we do that – I’d like to take a few minutes to do something that is very over due.” Jack smiled for the crowd and glanced back to his wife who stood carefully and pulled a small box from her purse. “Colonel Sheppard, would you join me please?” John exchanged looks with Rodney but stood and walked to the place where O’Neill indicated and offered him a precise salute. “Sir.” “As it has always been in our history – we find that the best of us come forward in times of adversity to lead and to sacrifice for the betterment of our species. No one under my command demonstrates that spirit and that bravery more than you, John. On behalf of the President of the United States it is my great honor to promote you to the rank of Brigadier General.” Jack smiled…

Reading Time: 52 Minutes* * * * “Oh, because that’s so reasonable.” Rodney tucked a headset into his ear as he jerked off his tie and tossed it aside. “Look, I fucking told you when I left that you were absolutely not to do this experiment until Radek and I both were on hand. Since I know Radek is on a goddamned plane to Nevada, and I am actually in Nevada… it is impossible for either of us to be in the motherfucking gateroom with you right now!” Sebastian was staring wide-eyed with something close to hero worship in his eyes and John was very worried. “Hell, no you can’t ask Dr. Carter to come in and help you. In case you missed, you idiot, she’s nearly eight months pregnant with twins and has been on mandatory bed rest for the last fucking month!” He pulled off his jacket, tossed it aside and shot Sean a look who was busily opening several laptops onto a table. “Send me the goddamned program immediately. We’ve got four teams off-world, by the way, one of them being lead by the Colonel’s brother and the Admiral is off world with the Orion. You know damn well how imperative it is to have a functioning gate when the Director of Homeworld Security is off the fucking planet! I can assure you that if you’ve stranded anyone off world and their circumstances are less than vacation perfect I’m going to make you beg to die.” Rodney…

Reading Time: 46 Minutes* * * * Five days and six interviews later, Rodney was ready to have a screaming fit. None of them would do. The only qualified person he’d interviewed had been a decidedly mousy woman whom he would have destroyed two days in and then he would have felt compelled to put her up in a very nice mental facility for the rest of her life. John had laughed through most of that interview and had actually had to get up and leave at one point. He currently had SGC security while the men John had hired went through a battery of tests and background checks that closely resembled but was not exactly like the Spanish Inquisition. They’d even had to go through psychological testing. “Ian, would you go ahead and let this last guy in?” Ian smiled ruefully. “He’s on his phone bitching at someone—should I wait?” Rodney frowned and stood up. “Huh.” He walked to the front door and opened it. He knew enough about Sean Taylor to be very intrigued. He had a MBA, an undergrad degree in Information Systems, he was twenty-seven years old, had taken another boy to his Senior Prom, had a mom who thought he hung the moon and stars, and was reportedly single. He opened the front door and leaned on the frame to watch the younger man pace on one end of the porch. He’d obviously worked up a head full of steam at someone. “Look, I don’t…

Reading Time: 35 Minutes* * * * “You know the beauty of showering with you is that all of the enlisted men make like the wind when we come into the locker room.” John watched him turn under the shower spray. “Mer, there isn’t a man on this base that would stay in the shower area with you at this point. Trust me on that. If you were alone you’d probably have a couple of self-appointed guards on the door.” “Speaking of self-appointed guards, I had a talk with one of my mine last night.” His gaze flicked towards the security camera and he sighed. “I think I’ve got that situation under control.” “Oh yeah?” John scrubbed shampoo into his hair and ducked under the spray. “He okay?” “Yeah. I’m going to help him hook up with someone in Geology.” He sighed. “It’s not exactly a soft science, but it’s not anything great either. Also, he’s looking into getting into Officer Candidate School.” “Good for him. Going enlisted first is smart; experience wins out.” He glanced towards Rodney when he heard him hiss in pain. “You okay.” “Yeah, just lifting my arms pulls at my ribs a little.” He finished washing his hair quickly and rinsed. “I need to go by the infirmary and get them re-taped I guess.” They were getting dressed in the locker room area when two teams came all of them talking and laughing. They came to a stop and hovered near the front of the…

Reading Time: 40 Minutes* * * * John inclined his head in invitation. “Lt. Nelson, that just leaves you.” Nelson picked up the rods that his teammate had discarded as he had all but crawled from the sparring ring and rolled his head. The popping of bones was sharp and hard in the now very quiet room. “I’m not going to be easy like the rest of them.” “You know what?” John responded coolly. “I sincerely hope not. Because I owe you a conversation and I do my best communicating in this room.” He didn’t take his time like he had with the others; didn’t hold back. Every blow was powerful, precise, and merciless. And the second time he struck, he drew blood. It sprayed out across the sparring ring like rain. Nelson drug one hand across his mouth and glared. “It isn’t like he didn’t want it.” John circled him. “Is that your way of asking for a mercy killing?” He struck the man across the back with four quick blows that sounded like a whip hitting naked flesh and Nelson stumbled briefly, when he turned, John kicked him the face and sent him sprawling. “You’re not going to kill me. Flyboys like you don’t have it in you to kill in cold blood.” Nelson struggled to his feet. “You wouldn’t even be the first person I’ve killed this week,” John responded softly. The mood in the room altered slightly and the entire squadron shifted on their feet. “So,…
