SOPA

Reading Time: 2 MinutesMany of you might think that SOPA won’t have any impact on you — you aren’t a software pirate, after all. You don’t download illegal music. You don’t download or sell illegal copies of movies or books. It’s not a problem, right? WRONG. The problem isn’t that SOPA will hamper our “funtimes” on Youtube (well it would) or that it would make legitimate website owners freak out (it so would) it’s that the bill wasn’t written by people who actually understand how the Internet works and more importantly — it wasn’t written by someone who respects the Freedom of Speech. Intellectual Property Rights are for the INDIVIDUAL — not companies.  They were put into law to protect the rights of writers, artists, and musicians and to give them the MONEY they needed to live so that they could create more work. It was never designed to limit or destroy free thinking, innovation, or the creation of transformative works (like fan fiction). I don’t believe corporations should be have this kind of power in our country. There is a link on my Facebook wall right now that could shut down all of Facebook if this law passed. In fact, there are several since I adore YouTube (which would not survive SOPA). Twitter might last 24 hours before someone posted a link to content they shouldn’t and then bam– they lose their account OR the government comes in and tells Twitter they are toast. OR they could try — because SOPA has no…

On Writing No Enemy Within

Reading Time: 7 MinutesThis post contains SPOILERS. If you have not finished No Enemy Within you should back out and come back when you finish. 😉 Pretty spoiler space by FanArts Series When I started creating my series bible (January/February 2009) for Lantean Legacy I wrote down a few things and it went like this: 1. Sentient Atlantis 2. Abandoned by Earth 3. Left for Dead in Pegasus (I called it this for MONTHS) 4. Earth gets told to fuck off by the expedition 5. Will use Latin for the “Ancient language” because that makes the most sense. After I had my basic idea I started to thinking about the mental gifts the Alterans had before the ascended. Gifts we didn’t see in any of the people in the Alteran galaxy (Ori episodes) except for the priors of course which weren’t the “normal” for that galaxy. So, I started thinking about how they might have come to have the mental abilities and their crazy life span. It bothered me that Elizabeth got old in stasis pad after 10 thousand years but that one Ancient chick apparently hung out in a stasis pod frozen in ice for a very long while and came out looking like a super model. Okay, so what about the Ancients that got so old they couldn’t leave the stasis pods on the Aurora because they got too old after 10,000 years? Then there was Merlin (frowns). Just how long was he in that cave? Okay, so…

Q & A : Ties That Bind

Reading Time: 40 MinutesI had a reader email me with some questions about Ties That Bind. I’m going to answer them below. If you have questions–feel free to leave them on this post. I will add them to post and answer them as I have time. If you don’t feel comfortable leaving a comment you can email OR just put “private comment” in your comment and it won’t be posted on the site. Q) What power do the Pleasure Houses have to be able to bind the high political authorities ? A) Pleasure Houses do not have official power — they do have, however, a social power that makes each individual house a powerful force when it comes to social morals (like ownership laws) and discipline of an abusive Dom. The President of the US in this series was trained exclusively at La Petite Mort. So obviously, if Neal Peyton requested something from him—he would have little difficulty in receiving it. It is a world built on loyalty among Doms. Earning the displeasure of an entire house—like de Sade would be bad for a politician. Q) When Gerard de Sade has trained his disciples to be doms, how did he do it? A) Gerard trained one Dom for every year that he was House Master of de Sade. Think of it like an apprenticeship—the Dom in training with him would spend every waking hour in Gerard’s presence learning the ins and outs of pleasure and discipline through example. Q) At…

Moderation & Feedback

Reading Time: 2 MinutesIt’s true that I have a “positive” feedback policy and that I do screen the comments on this site. I do this because of the abuse I receive for writing slash not because I’m “over sensitive” or can’t handle critism. I don’t approve “critism” comments (though I’ve only gotten like 5 in the past year beyond people pointing out my grammar problems) because I don’t want the discussion that would result. I want this site to be FUN because I have fun with it. Having big discussions about politics (or whatever angsty thing my fic might inspire) doesn’t appeal to me AT ALL. I don’t require that anyone love my work. I just don’t want to hear about it on my own site if you hate it OR if you think I write badfic!, fluff, crack — whatever. I post my work for people to enjoy and if you don’t enjoy it– just don’t come back over here and read it anymore. Here’s the thing– at one point I didn’t even have comments enabled on my site. I opened them up because of email feedback. And the only reason I allow them now is because I feel like my readers have created a community for themselves AND I’m open to answering questions about my fic and future projects. I make jokes about feeding my ego with comments but let’s be real honest– you have to have a pretty damn healthy ego to create a site dedicated to your hobby,…

Writing Gay Porn in Public

Reading Time: 1 MinutesIt’s only a problem when your neighbors are VERY nosy. I’ve run off 3 people in an hour. The General and his reporter were here earlier and they were sitting on my left and finally one of them worked up the gumption to ask me what I was writing that I kept scaring off old ladies. SO, I told them and they laughed their asses off. OH- relationship totally confirmed for those of you who might remember them from before. Cause they asked about my website and I said they couldn’t read it which earned me the response (from the General) — “It’s not like we haven’t done it, sweetheart.” BLUSH. I’m working on finishing up A Lovely Agony by the way. :-). I think you guys will like it.

Cafe Sitting

Reading Time: 2 MinutesAnyone knows me– knows I like to sit cafes to write. I don’t know if people think I look “nice” or “approachable” but strangers talk to me ALL the time. Since I’m a social creature– I don’t mind this (much). Though on one occassion this proved way too interesting when a friend called me and asked me to define “snowballing” and I did– in front of a group of old ladies. I thought they’d be all shocked and horrified– instead– one asked– “But, dear, if that’s snowballing what is felching?”  o/ — I love pervy old ladies. Anyways– today I’m sitting in my favorite cafe with my large diet coke, grande mocha coffee, one muffin and my netbook. I’m all set for an afternoon of gay porn writing. Then this man who has to be 70 sits down beside me and starts arranging the table “just so”. It was kind of charming and he turns me.. and says– “Sweetheart, could you tuck your computer cord under the table so the General doesn’t trip over it?” I do so immediately because the last thing I want to do is trip up a some 70 year old guy who still gets called “General”. The other guy comes along with their food and they sit beside me and fuss about politics and the price of milk at Wal-Mart and every once in a while when they think I’m not looking– the General would reach out and put his hand on…

Hashbrown Casserole

Reading Time: 1 MinutesLadyholder asked a question and I can’t deny it– I love hashbrown casserole. I’d eat it at every meal if it wouldn’t make me the size of a barn. Receipe: 10.25 oz. can condensed cream of chicken soup (you can use onion soup here and skip the minced onion later) 8 oz. Colby cheese – grated (or cheddar) 1/2 cup melted butter OR margarine 1 sm. onion – minced 1 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. black pepper 2 lb. bag frozen shredded hash browns      -Spray a 13″ X 9″ X 2″ baking pan with non-stick cooking spray; set aside. -In a bowl, combine soup, cheese, butter, onion, salt, and pepper. -Gently fold the potatoes into the mixture and pour into prepared pan. -Bake in a 350 degree oven for 35-40 minutes, until heated through and top is browned.   I got this off a website years ago and it’s the best thing ever!

Happy Holidays!

Reading Time: 1 MinutesSomething to make you laugh: [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MdUdlR7XfAw] Have you guys been reading at SGA_Secret Santa? Well, if you aren’t you should! You’ll find yours truly among the authors this year. There have been 97 stories posted! Lots of good reading for everyone so don’t miss out. They’ll do the “author reveal” on January 1, 2009 and I’ll be posting my contribution to my website on January 2nd for archival purposes. I will say that mine is one of the McKay/Sheppard postings and it’s not related to any of the work I’ve done for my series stuff. It’s a stand alone piece but no guessing because I’m not going to say! I finished a story up for What MIght Have Been but I’ve realized that I have a story that needs told “before” it so– I’ve when I do post for the series again- you’ll get 2 stories instead of just one. 🙂 I killed another keyboard. This time– it was a glass of water. SIGH. It’ll probably be the 30th before the replacement arrives and I don’t know if my hands can take using a standard keyboard until then. I’ve been using a split-key ergonomic for so long that a standard keyboard is practically torture! Hope everyone is having a great holiday! Keira

Writing the 'What Might Have Been Series'

Reading Time: 1 MinutesToday, though it was hardly the plan, I wrote the final three scenes for What Might Have Been– it’s in the story “Ring of FIre” which I have plotted out in my head but I’m no where near ready to write. But the last three scenes just came to me in a flash of inspiration. I’ll admit I cried while I wrote it. Don’t worry– I’m a firm believer in happily ever after but gosh did I make John work for it. I’ve come up with some great ideas for future AUs because of this series and I’ve got a lot of ideas jotted down for when I’m finished but a part of never really wants to finish it. I just want to keep writing for it forever but I do have a great idea for a second series with the same characters in the same universe– so we’ll see how that goes. My Sentinels of Atlantis series is bugging me and I’ve got a great idea for another AU that is a Sentinel/Criminal Minds/Stargate Fusion that will just not let me go at all. Tons of ideas and really so little time. I’m also tempted to dig out my old SG1 fanfic and polish it up. On other things– I think I’m going to take Vala and Daniel to Atlantis in the ‘Dark Places in the Soul Series’ and I’ve got a great story set up for John/Laura that will be heart breaking but lovely all…
