Evil Author Day & Junk!
I hope that you found lots of new tidbits to read today and that you’ve been enjoying 2025 as much as you can considering the circumstances that we won’t be discussing here. Because honestly, what the actual fuck.
I hope that you found lots of new tidbits to read today and that you’ve been enjoying 2025 as much as you can considering the circumstances that we won’t be discussing here. Because honestly, what the actual fuck.
In truth, I can’t control what people do with my work. I can, however, create serious problems for those who abuse my generosity (and I have).
Reading Time: 1 Minutes I’m recovering from shingles so I’m exhausted and a little mentally scattered. So, I hope my posts look okay. My offerings are relatively small this year because I posted a lot last year and didn’t leave a lot of what I consider to be active projects unfinished. Fortunate Son was originally meant to be a Quantum Bang offering but I believe that what I’ve plotted is far too “alternate universe” to meet what my own standard for what a fix it is for the QB. Happy Reading! As I approach my 37th year as a writer, I’ve been thinking about how I set goals for myself and what feels attainable going forward. Last year I set a great goal, it was motivating but not overwhelming or stressful. I feel great about my success with it.
Reading Time: 2 Minutes Every few years, I notice a shift in the tone of my writing. When I was younger, it was off-putting as I was deeply invested in my “voice” as a writer and worked hard to protect it. Eventually, I came to realize that all writers are works in progress, and change is the goal. I never want to stop growing, adapting, and learning how to put together stories in ways that entertain me. As I write this, I’ve busted over 100k on my current Quantum Bang project when my actual goal was just 95k. I don’t know why I thought that was reasonable considering. Anyway, there was a time when I would be immensely disappointed in going so far off the rails on the word count goal despite the fact that the actual project is on point for the plot I’ve created. I just didn’t give myself enough room for world-building in my estimate. An ongoing weakness for me as of late. I’ve resolved not to super stress it. I can’t say it doesn’t bother me because I have an obsessive-compulsive disorder, and part of the management of my condition is recognizing what upsets me and acknowledging it. Dismissing it and pretending it doesn’t bother me isn’t helpful at all. I set a personal goal for myself this year to post a completed project on my site at least once a month, and I’m proud to say that I accomplished it. I’m very proud of my…
Reading Time: 1 MinutesLet me just say that I’ve always considered myself a very lucky girl on the art front when it comes to fandom. My readers have gifted me with a lot of lovely art in the past and it’s always so much fun to get new art. BUT, the Quantum Bang art has become the highlight of my year since we started doing it. Tintalle did my art again this year and she told a lovely story with the art that really reflects the journey that my characters went on and I couldn’t be more happy with the art if I freaking tried. Honestly, it made me fall even more in love with my series. All four parts are now available to read on the Quantum Bang and you can check the series out here. Plus the art gallery:
Series: Over the Mountain Across the Sea
Author: Keira Marcos
Fandom: 9-1-1
Genre: Romance, Kid!fic, Slash
Relationship(s): Evan Buckley/Eddie Diaz
Content Rating: NC-17
Word Count: 132,738
Summary: After his wife leaves him in the middle of the night, Eddie Diaz reaches out to the best friend he’s ever had for help. Evan Buckley is living and working in Aspen, Colorado when his former lover and best friend is discharged from the Army due to injury. A single conversation changes the course of both of their lives.
I posted fan fiction online for the first time around May 20, 2008. It was a retreat, of sorts, from my life and career as I was stressing myself out in a way that was both mentally and physically dangerous. Finding a spot in fandom saved me, in a way, and it became a place of solace and comfort.
It’s Evil Author Day, the day I’ve celebrated fan works yearly since 2011 by posting works in progress I may or may not finish. And yes, there are works that are now complete that were once featured on EAD. I couldn’t tell you which at this point, but it’s happened. It will certainly happen in the future. In fact, I’m almost finished with Small Magic and All of Our Yesterdays.
I surpassed 50k today so I’ve officially won NANO. This marks my 15th NANO project in fandom which is pretty cool. I’m writing Warhide for NANO which is the sequel to Fireborn. I’d hoped to write Windrider on RT as well but book 2 got away from me so I’ll be writing that one probably in December while I continue to avoid my QB idea like the plague.
I have been gifted with art and this is a bragging post! You can check out all the art I’ve received over the years in the galleries.
Reading Time: 2 Minutes I’m trucking along just fine–though I have, perhaps, over challenged myself. On that front: I finished my QB and I’m getting ready to move into the beta phase. I’ve finished my offering for the Big Moxie Q1 and I’m at the 75% mark on the first draft for Q2. I’m pleased with both. In other writing news, I’ve finished the first season of The Vanguard so the next 5-episode arc will involve a small time skip so and will start with John’s first day in the SGC. I’ve zero drafted the series all the way to the Atlantis expedition so we’ve got a long road on that front. I hope you guys don’t mind taking that trip with me! I posted three excerpts for Evil Author Day, and yes, they’re all for the 9-1-1 fandom. I’m enamored with the new pairing and I’m okay with that. I realize it’s not the fandom many of you’d like me to focus on but I’m always going to write where I’m the most inspired any given moment. I’m really happy with my writing lately and there’s something huge to said about that. I’ve been working on uploading podcasts the last few days so expect to see that for a while as I work through last year’s final few podcasts and we’ll get started on the ones that we’ve recorded this year. We have a new recording mechanism so the sound quality might change for you. No clue really. I…
I sort of lost interest in doing quarterly newsletters and just put out haphazard ones as it appealed to me. That’s probably how it will go from now on. Last year, I met all the goals I set for myself regarding productivity and works in progress. This year, I’ve set the same word count goal (350k) just because a doable goal is better for my mental health. I’m not at a point in my life where I want to challenge myself hard on that subject.
We’re moving into day 2 of the Quantum Bang and I meant to write this yesterday! In our third year, we’re offering 2.7 million freaking words for your reading pleasure. The total site word count is 6,528,393 words and at an average reading speed of 200 words a minute, it would take you 545 hours to read it all. You’re welcome fandom!
In November of this year, Rough Trade will turn 10 years old. I can’t say I expected my NANOWRIMO challenge to morph into what it is today but overall I’m pleased with it. Sometimes the struggle has been real. As a writer, I think I’ve grown with each challenge, but I think I learned more during the times that I failed.
I officially “joined” fandom in May of 2008. I’ll be celebrating my site anniversary on May 20th (13 years) and I didn’t do my first fan fiction bang until 2019. I’ve rarely participated in fandom-specific challenges outside of events on Rough Trade. I could go into a long-winded explanation about my reasons for joining fandom, to begin with, and how many of those planned events in the past looked so fucking stressful I could barely breathe at the mere thought of signing up.
So, I had this epiphany last night. It was empowering, honestly. It’s something I knew on an intellectual level but it’s not something I’d ever really embraced emotionally. Let me lay it out for you:
In 2019, around the end of December, I made this personal goal to write every single day for the year of 2020. I did it for several months before shit got terrible (for obvious reasons that we’ll just not discuss because GAH).
It’s been a hard year (for everyone) and I’ve had this weird relationship with my writing that I’ve struggled with throughout Rough Trade events.
About halfway through July, I took a moment to reset. Frankly, it was a hard reset and it had nothing to do with the story I was writing. I’m actually quite enamored with House of Wolves and will certainly finish it when the inspiration returns.
You might have noticed that there have been some loading issues with my site (and the Quantum Bang) this is due to the limits on the server/hosting service we’re currently using. Simply put, the hosted WordPress we’re using can’t handle the size of the two sites or the traffic. I expect it will also be a problem (traffic-wise) for Rough Trade in July.
Earlier in the month, I made some changes to the site and accidentally broke commenting. I was just trying to keep bots from hitting my comment form like a berserker. I think it’s fixed now! Sorry about that ;-).
To start, I’ve had to make some changes to my website in response to my very fragile database. I’ve been having issues on and off for the last year, and I’ve tried a lot of workarounds to fix it, but nothing really worked. This morning I woke up, and all of the comments had detached from my posts. They were just free-floating, and it was horrifying. Thankfully, I was able to back up to yesterday and resolve that issue, but this is the fourth time that’s happened, so I had to make a decision about the size of my database.
So, technically speaking I posted 4 works to EAD this year. I’ve removed three of them. I might replace it with something else. I’m taking a break from the Harmony pairing so I’ve removed the WIPs for that pairing from Evil Author Day and the Wild Hare Project because they’re all subject to massive edits regarding the pairing. I didn’t want to cause confusion later with various versions of the fic existing more than they already do.
Reading Time: 4 Minutes This year has felt super productive for me for a variety of reasons. I’ve written just short of 800k words for the whole year and posted 325k on my site. That seems crazy, in retrospect, but I do have a lot of works in progress—128. We’ve been discussing goals and writer habits on the Writer’s Table (FB group) and have set up a few spaces on the Just Write Discord server to further that goal. Workgroups full of writers provide a source of comfort and inspiration for what is largely a solitary endeavor. My writer circle in meat space has slowly shrunk over the years for various reasons, but I’ve learned that online groups can be just as beneficial and rewarding. I can say without a doubt that one of the reasons why I’ve been so productive this year boils down to the writerly spaces we’ve created on Discord and specifically the people who’ve made themselves at home on the server. Additionally, Discord became my social home of sorts when I created the Crossroads server. We do our podcast creation there and the space has proven much more inclusive and easier to manage than our previous recording situation. The podcast is fully syndicated now and pretty easy to find across various platforms so you can listen to us ramble. Or alternatively, play it for your pets. Pets love us. We’ll keep your fur babies company while you’re gone. This year also included some very personal stress…
Reading Time: 2 Minutes I’ve settled pretty well on Discord for podcast recording. It certainly seems to be working better for the people who can listen to the live shows as well. We’ve also been recording some podcasts without a chat audience and the first Conversation (Jilly Plots her Shifts ‘Verse) is live. We have several others but they’re Quantum Bang related and will have to wait until after those stories are published next year. The podcast is now fully syndicated as far as I can tell. If I’m not hitting a major service/app you prefer feel free to comment here and let me know. I’ll certainly try to get my RSS feed fed into it. You can use the podcast player on my site as well without impacting my bandwidth at all so no worries on that front. I’m still thinking and planning on my essay series and I’ve nearly finished a “ritual magic” kit for writers which I think will be really fun for HP fans. I’m still working on Small Magic. The battle of the five armies was honestly a poor choice on my part as the end game for that fic. I probably won’t be able to do a complete blackout on Fluff Bingo but I just one fic left to get a bingo at least so it’ll probably be a Harry/Hermione short. I’ve plotted my QB for 2020 and my RT story for November so I’m pretty set on that front. I’ve been thinking about…
Reading Time: 1 MinutesI have a couple of big projects coming to the site in the next couple of months (Unleash Your Demons and Finding Atlantis among them). I’m preparing for July Rough Trade. I picked The Terminator and Aliens for my two movies and I’m looking forward to writing on both projects. I did my art banners on Fotojet (of course) and I’m pretty pleased with them. I’ve finished the move to Castbox and “produced” a couple of shows by recording on Discord and it’s going well. Syndication for the show is in full swing and right now only iHeartRadio is pending. I’ll update that situation on the podcast page when I get one (if I get one). So far I’ve been able to syndicate through: Google Music, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Blubrry, Podcast Addict, & TuneIn. I have links for all of those services the podcast page. Because the built in player for Castbox is much nicer and easier to browse than the one I had previously, I’ve removed the individual title listing from the podcast page. You can scroll down indefinitely through the episodes which is great. I’d like to finish Small Magic this year, you can read a rather large excerpt on my EAD community. But I won’t make any promises on that front. It’s easily the biggest WIP I’ve got that is very close to being finished. I’ve been considering “fandom” oriented essays regarding my own headcanon ’cause I figure it will be fun. In a…
Reading Time: 3 Minutes I’ve got a full plate! It’s always best to be kept busy and I’m certainly managing that this month (and for the next few months on top of that). Rough Trade is in full swing for April and the Quantum Bang has been very successful so far. We had 25 projects come in for the art claim which is stunning! We didn’t expect that many to be completed by May ;-). We’re super proud of all of you guys. I can’t wait to start reading. Even more are finished or will be finished for the second art claiming in May. You guys are just awesome! I’ve some more original works on the plate as well including one about a lightkeeper who gets a summer assistant he’s not sure he can handle. It will be gay historical. I’ve had a great time researching lighthouses. Also I’m noodling Synthetic and trying to rework the concept with original characters after my total fail to write it as an SGA fusion. I’ll have to scrap all the work I’ve written since I don’t want to “scrub” it and present it as original which isn’t totally terrible since I don’t like what I wrote anyways. Happy Spring! New Original Work Coming April 15, 2019 from Cobblestone Press Henri Shaw joins the Pleasure Club for the fun of it, but he longs to explore his deeper sexual desires. His Pleasure Master gives him everything he asks for and exactly what he needs.…
So mostly I’ve been focusing on the Harry Potter fandom and my Quantum Bang story. I’m plotting a Stargate: Atlantis story for April and I’m pretty pleased with my idea so far. We’ll see how it goes. I’ll probably put my NANO project from last year up on the site in the next month or so. It was meant to be a series but honestly I just don’t know if that is going to happen. We’ll see how I feel about it during editing/beta. We’re just 13 days out from sign-ups for April Rough Trade.
I’ve had a very productive year at least in the background. I know there haven’t been a lot of site updates but I’ve got lots of big projects brewing and I don’t like to post novels as works in progress (as you know). This policy is one reason why I really enjoy posting in episode format. It made posting big works like (Sentinels of Atlantis and Harry Potter & the Soulmate Bond) much easier to manage. Still, there is something pretty righteous about putting together a novel like Courting Hermione Granger — it is an entirely different experience than writing a series of episodes.
We’re gearing up for a couple of challenges Rough Trade in July and the newly minted Quantum Bang that starts in August. I’ve got a few projects here and there on my plate to finish in the midst of all of that. I hope you’re having a great summer!
Reading Time: 1 MinutesRough Trade has gone tremendously well this month! With 1.3 million views and over 4k comments, the authors are churning out a lot of great fiction so I hope you’ve had a chance to get over there and check it out! Our word count for the month so far is 1,336,178 words. You are WELCOME Harry Potter fandom! I’m working on cleaning up Revenant so it can be moved to my main site and I expect to finish Small Magic before July so hopefully, that’ll go into beta before we head into the next challenge which will be a Little Black Dress event. New Works I finished my rough draft of What Lovers Do and you can read it on RT through the end of June. I’ll put up the completed beta on my personal site probably before then but it won’t change much from the rough draft. New Art I received some lovely new art from Tiffany. Thank you! Reading Time: 1 Minutes Working on my plot for the April Harry Potter challenge. I’m on the fence, still, about a WIP or a new story for the challenge but I’ll figure it out by the sign-ups. Hope everyone is having a great month and that the year hasn’t sucked ass so far. Monthly newsletters were starting to feel like a burden which is silly so I’m switching to a quarterly format because I like doing the update part but the content seemed sparse on a monthly basis.
The summer passed by quickly, right? I think the July challenge went very well on Rough Trade and you can read my series, Revenant, on the site until October 1st when it will be deleted in the site clean off. I’ll be working on the series off-line from now on and the episodes will be put on my own site as they leave beta.
I think Rough Trade is going well for me but I’m very comfortable in the episode format so I didn’t expect it to be much of a challenge on that front. I essentially failed to pants though–I had to stop and plot as to avoid driving myself crazy. I’m writing episode 5 and I’m enjoying the change of pace I’ve plotted for this one.
My brain is all over the place and my writing is certainly been impacted by it. I mean, seriously, I think one word another comes out of my mouth or gets typed out. It’s crazy and I know a thing or two about “making insane”.
Reading Time: 1 Minutes I forgot to do a newsletter in April. Oops? I was knee deep in the RT challenge, and I did meet my word count goal for the month even if I didn’t actually finish the project. I’m about three chapters and an epilogue from finished so I’m pretty pleased with my progress since I’d been blocked on that particular story for more than a year. Darkly Loyal will remain on RT through the end of the month then it will be removed to make room for the next challenge on the site. I don’t know when it will be completed and appear in its final form on my site. Don’t ask! I’ll be picking out topics for radio shows for the rest of the summer so if you have ideas — go to the Ask Me Anything page and let me know. New Fiction The Quiet Storm Coping Strategies Battle Ready Works in Progress The next part in the Hold My Coffee series, Damage Control, is in beta. I’m pleased to announce that FALL FOR YOU is available in print on demand. It’s available for purchase in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, and Japan. (Please note that it is being sold in English on all of these sites). I don’t know if it’ll available on other Amazon sites in the future so please don’t ask. It is being printed and distributed by Amazon exclusively, and those are the links I was given when I asked.
I’m plugging right along on the writing front. The weather sucks. I’m tired of experiencing all of the seasons in a four-day cycle. I’ve been fiddling with a Girl McKay which you might have noticed and expanded my short into a story/episode. I’ve plotted about 10 of them and I’m pretty amused with the whole thing. I’ve already almost finished the second episode and it’ll probably go into beta next week sometime.
